American Road Trip with St. Scooby Doo Day 5

Day 5
Tv in the room is saying a storm is a brewing and seems any way is is storm weather.. Heading west today to Mississippi and trying to stay on nice roads. Pen at the wheel

Stopping for gas.. and it is aprox. 40 dollars a time to fill the tank in Scooby!

This gas station was ran by an old man who has been here for 15 years ,, liked his car plate.. you got a friend in Jesus

Got a take out of coffee and also a chicken sandwich.. again looked on curiously as soon we spoke,, held the door as i exited for a chap and he said.. 'I should be doing that for you, that is the first time a lady has held the door for me. thank you ma'am'.
I am getting to really like the ma'am bit hee hee
Regret not going into one of the several piggly wiggly shops. Did visit Walmarts and also Dollar General

Getting to quite like the reg plates.. seems each state have their own and Alabama's made me titter.. what we have seen of the state so far we are not enthralled with however do like the song ' sweet home alabama'

Stick on steeples,, Pen says must be a factory making them,, so many and all look alike and appear to be plonked on top. There is an awful lot of churches some look like large prefabs.

Through Daktur - NO not stopping here is very fg. horrid over the state border of Mississippi and into Tishomingo -                  mileage 113 miles

Out of Tishomingo....  Really liking the signs on the churches, Pen pulled over for me to take the shot

Kathy at the wheel and Pen in the book.... Stopped at Booneville,
Spotted the bullet hole.. perhaps someone didnt like the cake after all

Kath found a great shot in an old diner

( I did ask to take the shot but felt a tad uncomfortable with the woman staring)
On our way to Oxford which according to our new books is a university town.
Pen writing... we like Mississippi, lush as you like with drippy dangly trees.. v v v green more variety of churches not just baptist, Pentecostal and Popeish & Zion,, its 82 degrees @ 3pm
Pulled over to shoot the red barn

and into Oxford.

Nice to see a different type of church building

Went trying on a few dresses and Pen treated me to a new one.. which i like alot.
Then spotted the red telephone box..  This is a quaint pretty college town. Asked a local how far to Clarksdale (read in the books that this is the home of the blues) and was warned not to go there a bit grim.. That is a good invitation to proceed.
Back in the Scooby Mobile and Pen back at the wheel.. mileage 102
Mississippi Delta is flat!

long , long straight roads .. straight as a ruler and very long.  Booked us into the quirky pink guesthouse (curstesy of one of the books) on Yazoo avenue.  Home of the blues and no way,,, there is no music on tonight!!!!!

OOOHHHH another dead Armadillo on the road.. Looked like a big woodlouse on its back. Roadkill is certainly interesting in Mississippi, in fact there are also Raccoons and Possums.

First sighting of Clarksdale,, well actually you will have to imagine them as shots too bad as Pen did not stop hee hee. train tracks and shacks  ok,, so  thin bumpy road and then the train track running alongside.. ' wrong side of the tracks' could this be where it originated?

The whole town looks a bit derelict and closed and then cy lady took us to the pink guest house.. wow.. that is a big building.
Met Pal the owner who we learnt writes very expensive invitations for the very rich and he showed us round.. Now i had a feeling I didnt like the house as soon as I walked through the door,, dont know why cos it was lovely and so big.. but as soon as he said.. 'well you are the only ones stopping here tonight' - NOT SO MUCH! ' BUT DON'T YOU LIVE HERE' i asked in a small voice,,' nope a mile and a half away'..
OH dear and then he said if it was just a woman on her own i would be worried but you 2 will be fine.. NOT SO MUCH..
Listened for a long while his stories on the various things in the house,, ie the stairs that came from a brothel, the deep skirting boards that came from Memphis.,, the lady who did the work on the house blah blah blah and then oh i had to listen to the watery walls and he liked Pen.
PENPAL  hee hee
Impossible we are so unlucky to arrive in the birthplace of the blues and there is no music on on a monday. BAH..
........................... BUT THEN,, ooh i can see super chikans car outside the bar over the road he said,, YAY turns out he is a celebrity

So after Pal left we went out to investigate ,, passed the bar and cheekily asked ' any music on tonight'
COME ON IN...

Turns out there was a band playing for international blues artieste WATERMELON SLIM.. (SEE BELOW)
CHECK OUT ME SIS WITH TRAINWRECK WILLY
AND ALSO SUPER CHIKAN - with his shotgun made into a guitar

Had a really great night
RAZORBLADE SHOWN BELOW

So after a few beers .. chilled relaxed and i still wanted to sleep in Scooby ...
got back and followed Pen everywhere even to the toilet..

honestly this house is just too big and all the while the fountain is gushing from the middle of the house

and then being a bit sisterish hee hee

Off to bed.. where i have to say shut the monstrous doors through to the balcony that overlooked the fountain then the other door with the big wooden poles then ours.. I hardly slept as kept looking at our door and made Pen sleep with the light on.. in fact I got into bed with her but then the bugger moved back out..
